Arsenal could be heading for some very lucrative days in the transfer market.
Gabriel Martinelli, Ben White and Martin Zubimendi have all been linked with moves away from Emirates Stadium. If Arsenal were to get their asking prices for the trio, we could potentially be talking about well over NOK 1.5 billion in transfer revenue.
But the situations surrounding the three players are very different.
Ben White – Everton prepare to move
Ben White could be approaching the end of his Arsenal career.
Everton are reportedly ready to make a move for the England defender if Arsenal complete a deal for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa. Football Insider reported on 15 August that White himself is said to be open to a move to Merseyside to secure more regular first-team football.
It is not difficult to understand why a move is being discussed.
For several seasons, White was virtually a permanent fixture at right-back under Mikel Arteta, but injuries have changed the situation dramatically. He played just 12 Premier League matches last season, following 17 league appearances the season before. Arsenal also have several options across the back line, and signing Konsa would make the competition even tougher.
White appeals to Everton precisely because he can play at both right-back and centre-back. The club have been looking for a new right-back throughout the summer, and White is now said to be among their leading options.
There is no publicly known bid from Everton as yet. That makes a White transfer less concrete than the situation surrounding Martinelli.
Nevertheless, the door appears to be open.
Martinelli – the bid is already on the table
The situation surrounding Gabriel Martinelli is far more concrete.
Galatasaray have submitted a bid of around £38 million for the Brazilian. Arsenal are reportedly willing to sell Martinelli if the price is right, leaving the club facing a major decision before the transfer window closes.
At the exchange rate on 17 August, £38 million is equivalent to approximately NOK 485 million.
The obstacle is the player himself.
Martinelli is reportedly not pushing to leave Arsenal, and reports in recent days have claimed that he has rejected the opportunity to move to Turkey. His preference is said to be to remain in one of Europe's biggest leagues.
That does not necessarily mean Martinelli will stay.
Arsenal have already signed Christos Tzolis, and the club have also explored the market for further reinforcements on the left wing. The London Standard reports that Arsenal are open to listening to offers for Martinelli. The Brazilian scored just one Premier League goal last season and now has one year left on his contract, albeit with an option for a further year.
Napoli have also been linked with the 25-year-old. Further options could therefore still emerge if Martinelli does not want to join Galatasaray.
Of the three big names, he is perhaps the most realistic candidate to be sold at present.
Zubimendi – Arsenal demand around NOK 1 billion
Then there is the potentially huge deal.
Just one year after Martín Zubimendi arrived from Real Sociedad, the Spanish midfielder has been linked with both Real Madrid and Chelsea.
But Arsenal have no plans to sell cheaply.
Reports in Spain claim that Arsenal have set a minimum asking price of around €90 million. At the current exchange rate, that is equivalent to around NOK 982 million.
One reason behind the speculation is Arsenal's signing of Bruno Guimarães. The Brazilian increases competition in a midfield that already includes Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino, Zubimendi and several other options.
Chelsea are reportedly monitoring the situation, while Real Madrid have also been linked with the Spaniard. But it is important to stress that developments here are significantly less advanced than with Martinelli.
Zubimendi still has four years left on his contract, played 54 matches for Arsenal last season and was a key figure as the club won the Premier League. Arsenal therefore have no financial need to sell.
Other reports go even further, claiming that Arteta does not want to sell Zubimendi this summer unless an extraordinary offer arrives.
Zubimendi is therefore primarily the man who could make Arsenal's sales revenue enormous if someone actually meets the club's demands.
Could exceed NOK 1.5 billion
The figures illustrate the value Arsenal have at their disposal.
The Martinelli bid of around £38 million and Arsenal's reported €90 million asking price for Zubimendi alone represent around NOK 1.47 billion at the exchange rates on 17 August.
Add a potential sale of Ben White, and the total would quickly exceed NOK 1.5 billion.
But Arsenal supporters should not necessarily expect all three transfers to happen.
Martinelli has a firm bid on the table, but does not currently want to join Galatasaray. Everton's interest in White appears genuine, but depends on how Arsenal's own pursuit of defensive reinforcements develops. And Zubimendi currently looks more like a player Arsenal have put a very high price on than one the club are actively trying to sell.
Nevertheless, the rumours say something about the situation at the Emirates:
After several years of enormous investment, Arsenal suddenly have a squad in which players worth hundreds of millions of kroner could become surplus to requirements.
And if just two or three of the major pieces fall into place before the window closes, Arsenal could go from big spenders to billion-kroner sellers in a very short space of time.
