Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention to Barcelona's Gavi as they seek further midfield reinforcements. The Spanish World Cup winner has already become one of Europe's most high-profile young midfielders – and just a month ago was at the centre of the chaotic scenes after the World Cup final against Argentina.

According to Catalan newspaper El Nacional, Manchester United are considering a move for Gavi before the transfer window closes. A potential package of €40 million in a guaranteed transfer fee and a further €15 million in add-ons has been reported. Bayern Munich are also said to be monitoring the situation.

The reports have not yet been confirmed by Manchester United or Barcelona and must therefore be treated as a transfer rumour. What is clear is that United manager Michael Carrick wants further reinforcements. Carrick recently said the club were still working to improve the squad following the signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, among others.

Gavi is reportedly one of the players now being mentioned in that context. El Nacional claims that Barcelona will not necessarily push the 22-year-old out of the club, but that the situation could change if the player himself asks to leave Camp Nou. The newspaper also writes that it would take a great deal for Barça to accept a total package of just €55 million.

That is not difficult to understand either. Gavi extended his Barcelona contract until 30 June 2030 in January 2025, and the club have regarded him as a key part of their future on the pitch for several years.

From La Masia to World Cup winner

Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, better known as Gavi, turned 22 on 5 August. He comes from Los Palacios y Villafranca, near Seville, and began his football education at Real Betis before joining Barcelona's academy in 2015.

His breakthrough came extremely early. Gavi made his La Liga debut as a 17-year-old in August 2021 and quickly established himself in Barcelona's first team. He has since made more than 160 appearances for the club, with his aggressive pressing, technical ability and uncompromising style of play becoming some of his hallmarks. Barcelona themselves describe the midfielder as technically gifted, intelligent and fiercely competitive.

His international breakthrough came at least as quickly. He became Spain's youngest senior international at 17, and at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar he scored against Costa Rica to become Spain's youngest goalscorer at a World Cup.

His career has also been marked by serious injury lay-offs. In November 2023, he ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee during an international against Georgia and was out for almost a year. He has since had further knee problems. Nevertheless, he returned and was part of the Spain squad that made history in the summer of 2026.

Caught up in the World Cup trouble

On 19 July, Gavi became a World Cup winner when Spain beat Argentina 1–0 after extra time in the World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium. Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match in the 106th minute as Spain secured their second World Cup title.

But the images that went around the world after the match were not just about the trophy.

Shortly after the final whistle, heated confrontations broke out between players from the two teams. According to The Guardian, among other outlets, one of the most serious incidents began when Argentina's Nahuel Molina confronted Rodri. Eric García stepped in to help his Spanish team-mate before Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes became involved.

Paredes became physical with García, at one point grabbing him around the neck. Gavi, who was still wearing a training bib, then ran in to defend his team-mate.

That caused the situation to escalate further.

Paredes turned his attention to Gavi, while Thiago Almada also became involved. Gavi was pulled and pushed, his training bib was torn, and the Barcelona player ended up on the ground. Paredes was subsequently shown a red card after the final whistle.

The fallout did not end with the match itself. FIFA later opened disciplinary proceedings against several of those involved. Leandro Paredes was investigated on three counts relating to physical assault, while Gavi himself faced disciplinary proceedings for possible unsporting behaviour. Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and prominent Argentine coach Roberto Ayala were also included in FIFA's proceedings.

Gavi surprised with his response to the trouble

Gavi's reaction afterwards also said a great deal about the personality Manchester United may be considering bringing in.

Despite being thrown to the ground himself, the Spaniard did not want the Argentine players to receive subsequent bans.

During a celebration back home in Los Palacios a few days after the World Cup triumph, Gavi said he felt the actions did not set a good example for children, but that such confrontations can also happen in football. In his view, a sending-off in connection with the match was a more appropriate response than further suspensions afterwards.

That also fits well with the image of Gavi as a player: technically gifted, but perhaps best known for his intensity, temperament and willingness to get involved in situations other players would rather avoid.

A costly and complicated move for United

It is precisely that combination of technique and aggression that makes Gavi an intriguing prospect for the Premier League. He can play several roles in central midfield, cope with intense pressing and has shown with both Barcelona and the national team that he thrives in high-intensity matches.

For Manchester United, the main question will be whether the player is actually available.

Gavi is under contract until 2030, is a product of La Masia and has already won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, the European Championship and now the World Cup. Barcelona's own player profile also shows how highly the club still rate him.

At the same time, competition in Barcelona's midfield is considerable, and another potential star signing could make the battle for playing time even tougher. The Guardian has noted, among other things, that a potential Barcelona move for Rodri could affect the playing time of the club's existing midfielders, including Gavi.
